Russia will be able to launch ballistic missiles over a distance of 5,000 km — Zelenskyy
This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with BFMTV.
“It is true that Russia has very powerful ballistic missiles, and that they have, or will soon have, the capability to launch missiles over a distance of up to 5,000 km. It is only a matter of time,” the head of state emphasised.
According to the president, the aggressor country possesses missiles capable of striking any European city.
“That is why Europe needs its own missile defence system,” Zelenskyy noted.
He also spoke about the development of a new European missile defence system – in particular, Ukraine is already testing new air defence and missile defence systems. Eight European countries are involved in the project.
Zelenskyy noted that, if the tests are successful, the new system could be operational as early as this year. It is set to be cheaper than the Patriot system whilst providing reliable protection for both Ukraine and the whole of Europe.
It should be recalled that on 13 July, the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom signed a declaration establishing the Integrated Missile Defence Coalition.
The document states that the initiative was launched in response to the growing threat of ballistic missile use. The coalition aims to create an integrated missile defence architecture that will complement existing national and European defence systems.
Recently, the Ukrainian company Fire Point unveiled the FP-7.x anti-ballistic missiles, which are being developed for the advanced Freyja air defence system.
In addition, the company presented the concept of Freyja as a pan-European anti-ballistic shield, to be jointly owned by partner states.
