Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games from January 2028. The company explained that this is because consumers are increasingly opting for digital formats rather than physical ones.

This is stated in a statement by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The statement also added that this will not affect games that have already been released or are due to be released by January 2028. However, after that date, games will only be available to purchase in digital format from the PlayStation Store and retailers.

Gaming industry analyst Pierce Harding-Rolls stated that in 2013, when the PlayStation 4 was launched, only 13 per cent of people bought digital versions of games, whereas by 2025 this figure had risen to 80 per cent. He added, however, that the PlayStation 6 will not be released until at least 2028 and the console will not have a disc drive.

Meanwhile, Sony is closing the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PS Vita — meaning it will no longer be possible to purchase games for these devices. The company explained that these console models can no longer support the necessary updates, particularly in the area of payment processing. The PlayStation Store will begin to be phased out from August 2026 in Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, and by July 2027 it will be closed in all countries worldwide.

In February, Bloomberg, citing its own sources, reported that Sony plans to postpone the launch of the next PlayStation console until 2028–2029 and suggested that this was due to a shortage of RAM.
