Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has called on the EU to allocate €6.6 billion in military aid to Kyiv — Reuters
Reuters reports this, citing a letter from Fedorov to European partners.
The letter, dated 26 June, states that Ukraine needs €136 billion for defence this year, whilst the budget covers approximately €53 billion. Fedorov pointed out that this year Kyiv will receive nearly €28.3 billion for defence from the EU’s total loan of €90 billion.
However, he said that even taking all these funds into account, the defence funding gap remains unmet. He added that funds from the European Peace Facility could become “one of the most significant European contributions to Ukraine’s defence this year, but only if these resources are channelled where they can have the greatest and most immediate military impact”.
In June, the Verkhovna Rada approved amendments to the budget. Under these amendments, spending on security and defence will reach a record 4.4 trillion hryvnias. A further 2.3 trillion hryvnias will be spent on the procurement of weapons and military equipment, and over 1.45 trillion on military salaries.
