This was reported by the ‘Ukrhydrometcentre’.

On 30 June, daytime highs in some regions broke historical records for that date. The increases ranged from 0.1°C to 4.2°C.

The following figures were recorded in regional centres: in Uzhhorod — 36.5°C, in Lviv — 34.5°C, in Ternopil — 34.8°C, in Lutsk — 34.3°C, in Rivne — 34.9°C, in Khmelnytskyi — 32.4°C, in Zhytomyr — 33.5°C, in Vinnytsia — 34.3°C, in Kropyvnytskyi — 34.7°C, in Mykolaiv — 38.3°C, and in Kherson — 36.9°C.

Overall, daytime highs have been breaking records since 25 June, with the arrival of a heatwave caused by hot air spreading from northern Africa through southern and central Europe into Ukraine.

How can you protect yourself during a heatwave?

The Ministry of Health reminds the public that the heat is also a serious strain on the heart and blood vessels. High air temperatures can cause spikes in blood pressure, a rapid heartbeat and a deterioration in well-being, particularly in people with cardiovascular diseases or a predisposition to them.

To protect yourself:

  • drink 2.5–3 litres of clean water in small amounts;
  • choose loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics and wear a hat;
  • try not to go outside between 11:00 and 16:00, when the heat is at its peak;
  • avoid alcohol, sugary fizzy drinks, excessive coffee and strenuous physical activity;
  • listen to your body.
