Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced the decision to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. The Polish leader attributed this decision to disputes surrounding historical memory and attitudes towards the UPA

Navrotsky announced this in a statement published on the social media platform X.

According to the Polish president, the Order of the White Eagle is the country’s highest state honour and symbolises the Polish state’s special trust and respect. Navrotsky stated that, following consultations with the chapter, he had decided to strip Zelenskyy of the award due to the naming of one of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine ‘Heroes of the UPA’. At the same time, Polish media report that for the decision to come into force, it must still be approved by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

What Nawrocki said about Ukraine

The Polish President emphasised that his decision is not directed against the Ukrainian people and does not signify a change in Warsaw’s position regarding support for Ukraine. He noted that Russia remains the aggressor, and Poland continues to support Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity. At the same time, Nawrocki stated that Warsaw would defend its own historical memory and oppose the glorification of individuals whom Poland associates with crimes against the Polish population. According to him, Poland will also take historical policy issues into account when discussing Ukraine’s future accession to the European Union.
