Canada and India prepare new trade agreements during Karni's visit
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing India's High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik.
According to the diplomat, Karni's visit aims to restore relations between the countries and expand economic cooperation. Agreements covering energy, scientific research, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies and education are expected to be signed.
In particular, the parties may agree to increase Canadian uranium supplies to India. India is also interested in purchasing Canadian heavy oil and other energy resources, and is considering investing in pipelines and infrastructure.
In addition, Canada and India have resumed negotiations on a free trade agreement. According to the Indian side, such an agreement could be signed within a year.
The visit comes amid improving relations between the two countries following diplomatic tensions in 2023–2024. Canada's new government is seeking to renew its economic partnership and expand cooperation with India.
Mark Carney plans to visit Mumbai and New Delhi, where he will meet with political and business leaders and participate in the Canada-India CEO Forum.
