Abu Dhabi agrees to exchange 314 prisoners: the first in five months
On 5 February, during talks in Abu Dhabi, delegations from the United States, Ukraine and Russia agreed to exchange 314 prisoners. This was announced by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who stressed that this was the first exchange of this scale in five months.
According to him, the agreement was the result of detailed and productive peace talks. Witkoff stressed that there is still a lot of work to be done, but the decisions already reached demonstrate the effectiveness of ongoing diplomatic efforts and their real impact on the process of ending the war in Ukraine. He also noted that discussions will continue and further progress is expected in the coming weeks.
The Special Envoy thanked the United Arab Emirates for providing the venue for the talks, as well as US President Donald Trump for his leadership, which, in his words, made this agreement possible.
Earlier that day, Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine Rustem Umerov announced the start of the second day of negotiations in Abu Dhabi. According to him, the parties worked in the same formats as the day before, in particular within the framework of trilateral consultations, group work and further synchronisation of positions. The results of the second day, as noted, were to be announced later.
