European leaders gather in London
On Sunday, 7 June, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London. According to dpa, the main aim of the talks is to step up diplomatic efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. The parties also plan to discuss possible scenarios for future negotiations with Moscow.
Europe is preparing for various scenarios
According to the agency, European countries are proceeding on the assumption that Russia will not be able to avoid the negotiation process indefinitely. Should talks resume, European states expect to be involved in shaping future agreements.
“A window for negotiations between the European side and Russia is slowly opening,” dpa quotes representatives of German government circles as saying.
The meeting in London is intended to be part of the allies’ preparations for possible developments.
What preceded the meeting
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy approached Vladimir Putin with a proposal to set a specific date for a face-to-face meeting to discuss ending the war. The President of Ukraine also noted that Europe and the US could join the negotiation process. Putin responded by stating that he currently “sees no point” in such a meeting and reiterated that Russia would continue the war until its objectives were achieved.
